Hello everyone TheFlyingSuns here. I have always wanted to write an article (Or many more lol), on one of my favorite characters, Guts, so there you go! And Happy New Year to everyone! 2014, here we go!

Guts is the main protagonist from the series Berserk.

Berserk has an ongoing manga series, a 25 episodes anime series made back in the 90s, and more recently, a trilogy of animated film series. Note that both the TV and film adaptations only cover up to around volume 13 while the manga has released volume 37!

Berserk takes place in the medieval setting with supernatural and fantasy elements. It is a seinen series intended for young adults and adults. It has lots of violence and explicit themes, therefore it is not for the faint of heart.

Guts is a former commander of a group of mercenaries named the Band of the Hawk. A tragedy fell on the members of the Band of the Hawk as an eclipse occurred. As a result, the companions that Guts cared about lost their lives and Guts was forced to watch his love interest violated right in front of his eyes and there was nothing he could do about it. It was also during this eclipse that Guts lost his right eye and left forearm.

From then on Guts became a tornado of rage and hatred, determined to hunt down those that took the most important things from him.

The following quote is taken from Berserk Wikipedia’s description of Guts’ personality.

Guts has what could be the most complex personality in the entire series.”

On the outside, Guts appears to be indifferent to the well-being of those around him. But deep down inside, he cares greatly for his companions more than most would think. This can be witnessed on specific occasions. One being during an argument with Casca, another important member of the Band of Hawks as well as Guts’ love interest, she pointed out to Guts that the way he fights makes it seem that Guts doesn’t care about the rest of the squad and he only wants to satisfy his lust for battle.

Later Guts can be seen reluctantly rebutting Casca’s point and admitting that he does care about his comrades. This trait is most evident when Guts lost his companions during and after the eclipse, as he cries out to them numerous times throughout the event.

Of course Guts wouldn’t be the bad-ass we know today without his fighting abilities, strength of will, and weapons, right?

Dragonslayer anyone?

Guts has three figma variations so far.

First is the Blackswordsman version.

Release Date: January 2012

Notice on the last picture Guts has his left arm that was lost replaced with a fake arm, with a cannon! Awww yea >:)

Next is Guts in his berserker armor that was acquired around the end of Manga Volume 26 I believe. This version is a limited edition that included Volume 37 of the manga.

Release Date: March 2013

The little spirit on Guts’ shoulder is Schierke, I think that’s her name. She’s one of the magician companions that Guts will find later in the manga. She’s also the one that gifted the Berserker Armor to Guts, as instructed by her magic instructor and mentor, that is.

Lastly the more recent figma release of Guts is when he was a commander in the Band of the Hawk.

Release Date: December 2013

Note that Guts doesn’t have his trademark Dragonslayer sword in the Band of the Hawk version, that’s because he acquires the legendary giant slab of metal after the eclipse I talked about earlier.

And that’s Guts from Berserk!

Thanks for reading and good hunting!
